With an increasing number of states legalizing marijuana for medical use, and even for recreational purposes, people who enjoy smoking weed regularly may feel they have been vindicated. It can’t be all that harmful if governments are legalizing the drug, right? In reality, there are several very good reasons to quit using pot. Anyone who indulges in this mind-altering substance should at least be aware of those reasons in order to make an informed decision.

Many people start smoking pot in high school, soon after high school, or in college. Usually, it’s a social activity with one or more friends having fun, similar to the way friends drink alcohol together socially. Some individuals eventually start smoking by themselves to relax and ease the stress of the day. It can become a routine habit that is engaged in a few times a week or even daily.

Why quit? One crucial reason is to regain mental clarity and motivation. Research verifies that chronic marijuana smoking significantly reduces those qualities. Someone with a daily weed habit has more trouble with memory. There’s also more difficulty completing tasks that require concentration and a greater level of cognitive ability than is necessary for watching TV or other relatively mindless activities. Motivation and ambition also are reduced, and the individual doesn’t achieve nearly as much as he or she could otherwise.

A person who is skeptical about these factors might try an experiment like a 30-day trial. Giving up weed for 30 days will shed light on whether it has been impairing memory, drive, and cognition. If substantial improvements develop, the individual might consider quitting marijuana use for good or at least only indulging on rare occasions. Of course, it’s essential not to replace weed with alcohol or another drug or the experiment’s results won’t be valid.

Marijuana also costs money. Regular use requires a substantial amount of money that could be better spent on many other things. When a person adds up all the cash that went up in smoke over the past year, this can be a troublesome realization. Perhaps it’s time to stop using weed and finding healthier ways to relax and enjoy life.
